Women, Wine, and Health

We all are there on Friday evening after another CRAZY busy week.  The weekend is here and we are ready to unwind with some friends or on the sofa while watching some mindless tv.  For many years now, we have been hearing about how red wine is a healthier option to drink.  We all do know that when drinking wine, we can overconsume on calories, wake up with a headache, and not get good sleep at night.  So let’s break all this down so you know the benefits and side effects of red wine.

Heart Healthy

Red wine is healthier for you than white wine because it contains antioxidants which are also known as flavonoids. Flavonoids come from the outer skin of the grape in red wine which contains the health benefits.  Opposed to the grapes for white wine, do not have the outer layer of skin, so they do not contain the beneficial flavonoids.   The flavonoids that are in red wine increase the HDL levels of (high- density lipoproteins) cholesterol.  HDL is known as the good cholesterol and protects against cholesterol buildup in the arteries.

Moderation is Key

I live by the motto that everything in moderation is fine, which still includes alcohol.  That being said, those who drink red wine in moderation do have a lower risk of developing heart disease, according to the MayoClinic. The American Heart Association and National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute all agree that a person should not drink to red wine to prevent heart disease.  It is not a medication that will control or stabilize heart disease.   We all know that alcohol can be addictive so it is very important to drink it in moderation which means 1 glass of red wine a day at maximum.
